Reflection
What this hadith asks of us
Patience is often imagined as a personality trait: some people have it, others do not. This hadith gives a more hopeful picture. Patience can be granted. A person tries to restrain the tongue, tries not to despair, tries to take the next halal step, and Allah increases them in the very quality they are struggling to practice.
That means the first act of patience may feel shaky. You may not feel calm when you choose silence. You may not feel strong when you avoid a sin. You may not feel trusting when you make duʿāʾ through tears. But the attempt matters. Allah can place patience into the servant who keeps reaching for it. Do not wait to become patient before acting patiently. Begin with the next moment, and ask the Most Merciful to make the heart firm.
